I washed and shaved. I shaved slowly, wiping a port-hole in the steam, reading each wrinkle and pore. I put on a clean shirt, then called Randolph.

He stopped to explore a hedge. I slipped his lead, went on ahead over the crossing then called him. There was a bus. Someone had an arm out to request it, but maybe the driver didn’t see it, maybe it wasn’t on his route. He didn’t stop, or slow, until he saw Randolph, then he swerved, too late.

I held his slowly stiffening body in my arms, carried him home, wrapped him in his blanket. It was late by then, and I had to find a working cash dispenser.
